Computer Science Engineering (CSE) and Electronics Engineering continue to dominate student preferences among undergraduate engineering programmes in India, according to the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2023-24 released by the Ministry of Education. The findings reflect a sustained shift towards technology-focused education, driven by the rapid expansion of the digital economy and increasing demand for skilled professionals in emerging sectors.

The survey indicates that engineering remains one of the country’s most popular professional disciplines, with Computer Science attracting the largest share of enrolments among BTech specialisations. Electronics Engineering also features prominently, reflecting growing interest in semiconductor technologies, embedded systems, telecommunications and electronics manufacturing.

The preference for these branches aligns with India’s expanding technology ecosystem, which continues to create employment opportunities in software development, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data science and electronics design. Industry demand has encouraged higher education institutions to increase seats in these disciplines over the past few years.

AISHE 2023-24 also highlights the broader growth of higher education in the country. Total enrolment reached a record 4.5 crore students, while enrolment in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programmes crossed one crore, underlining the increasing popularity of technical education. Female participation in higher education has also recorded significant growth over the past decade, contributing to the overall expansion of enrolment.

The Ministry of Education uses AISHE data to assess trends in higher education and support policy planning across institutions. The latest report suggests that technology-oriented programmes continue to shape students’ career choices, with Computer Science and Electronics Engineering remaining among the most preferred BTech streams for aspiring engineers in India.
