Key Takeaways
- CBSE has begun pre-exam preparations for the 2027 Class 10 and 12 board examinations.
- Nearly 29.89 lakh students are expected to appear for the exams across 24 CBSE regions.
- The Board is seeking an agency to scan and process students’ ‘flying slips’.
New Delhi: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has started preparations for the 2027-28 Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations, with the board initiating the pre-examination process for nearly 30 lakh students expected to appear for the exams.
As part of the preparations, CBSE has invited bids to appoint an agency for scanning and processing the ‘flying slips’ containing details of candidates appearing for the board examinations. The exercise is aimed at digitising candidate-related data and ensuring that discrepancies are identified and corrected before the examinations.
The flying slips contain important details such as the candidate’s name, identification number, roll number, centre number and subject code. The selected agency will scan the documents using technologies including Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR), Optical Character Recognition (OCR) and Optical Mark Recognition (OMR). The data generated through the process will then be matched with CBSE’s existing records.
CBSE Board Exams 2027: Why Is The Data Being Digitised?
According to a CBSE official quoted in the report, examination-related activities are carried out in three stages — pre-examination, the examination period and post-examination activities.
The scanning of flying slips is part of the pre-examination process. CBSE has been moving these activities online over the past few years as the number of candidates has increased significantly.
Schools are required to submit candidate details online. They are then asked to generate copies of the information and have students and parents verify the details before submitting the final data.
The digitisation of the process is intended to reduce manual work and minimise the possibility of errors in candidate records.
Nearly 29.89 Lakh Students Expected To Appear
As per the details mentioned in the tender documents, approximately 29.89 lakh candidates from Classes 10 and 12 are expected to appear for the 2027-28 board examinations across CBSE’s 24 regions.
The expected number includes around 18 lakh Class 12 students, while approximately 25 to 26 lakh students are expected to appear for the Class 10 examination, according to the CBSE official cited in the report.
The pre-examination data processing work will be carried out across CBSE regional offices, including Ajmer, Prayagraj, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Ludhiana, Dehradun, Delhi East, Delhi West, Gurugram, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Noida, Panchkula, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Ranchi, Thiruvananthapuram and Vijayawada.
What Will The Agency Do?
The agency selected by CBSE will be responsible for scanning the flying slips, preparing and processing the data, and matching the information with the Board’s existing candidate database.
It will also identify discrepancies involving details such as roll numbers, candidate names, identification numbers, centre numbers and subject codes. Invalid or duplicate entries will be flagged and corrections will be incorporated into the database.
CBSE has proposed a two-year contract for the agency. The scanning exercise is generally conducted two to three times a year, including during the regular board examinations and compartment examinations.
CBSE Board Exams 2027: What Students Should Know
The latest development is part of CBSE’s preparations well ahead of the 2027 board examinations. Students and schools will need to ensure that candidate details submitted to the Board are accurate, as these records are used for examination-related documents and processes.
CBSE has also already issued a prior intimation regarding the submission of the List of Candidates (LOC) for the Class X and XII Examination 2026-27, according to the Board’s examination circulars.
